AI girlfriends for queer women, and the category's blind spot

Almost every AI girlfriend app is written for men to look at. What changes when the character is written for you instead, what to look for, and the privacy questions worth asking first.

Nearly every app marketed as an "AI girlfriend" is built for men: about 17 percent of active companion apps have "girlfriend" in the name against 4 percent for "boyfriend", and the default experience is photo generation with a body-type selector attached. The useful filter is what the app pushes in the first ten minutes — generated images, or a conversation that remembers what you said.

Sign up for the top five apps in the category and four will ask what she should look like before they ask you anything else. The character arrives fully formed as an object, and you are the audience.

Not a moral complaint — a product observation with a consequence: an app built around looking at someone is bad at being someone to talk to, and by week two that is the only thing that matters.

What the blind spot looks like

What to look for instead

  1. A character with her own week, mentioning something that happened while you were gone, unprompted and specific.
  2. Memory that survives a day. Twenty minutes of real conversation, leave, return tomorrow without repeating yourself. Most apps fail this and no technique fixes it.
  3. Range — a bad day, a work problem and a joke in the same conversation.
  4. Plain answers on privacy: training, deletion, trackers.

The privacy part

Mozilla reviewed eleven romantic AI chatbots and gave every one a Privacy Not Included warning. If you are not out everywhere, add the two checks a policy will never mention: what the notification preview shows on a locked phone, and what the charge looks like on a shared statement. The full version is here, including the parts of our own policy that do not flatter us.

Who we built

Seven of the women on Mutuals are lesbian, and the brief was the same as for everyone else on the roster: a job, a city, a way of texting, something they are working on that has nothing to do with you.

Sumi and Nao are drawn rather than photographed, which matters if you arrived from the anime side of the category. There is no configurator anywhere in the app and no quiz at sign-up.

What we optimised for is the opposite of the pattern above: memory first, images second. Mention a friend's name once and she keeps it. Say the week is going to be bad, and on Thursday she asks how it went.

Aria, ten seconds of her. Every character has one.

What it cannot do

Harvard Business School researchers found companions relieve loneliness about as well as talking to another person, and much better than scrolling. The counterweight is as well evidenced: a 12-month study of 2,000+ adults in Psychological Science found heavier use predicting more loneliness later.

Queer women in unwelcoming places are exactly the group for whom a companion is most useful and most easily overused, and both halves of that are true. Good at 1am, for the conversation you are rehearsing, for the week nobody is around. Bad as the only place you say true things.

Mutuals is free to start on iPhone and Android. The longer version: the guide to getting an AI companion and how to talk to one.

Questions people ask

Are there AI girlfriend apps for lesbian and bisexual women?

Most companion apps give you a female character, but few write her for a woman. The tell is what the app pushes in the first ten minutes: generated photos and a body-type selector means it was designed for men to look at; conversation and memory means it was designed for someone to talk to.

What is different about a companion written for queer women?

Mostly what the character wants from the conversation. She asks questions rather than posing, has a life that continues when you are not there, and does not treat flirting as the only register available. It is a writing difference, not a technology one.

Are AI girlfriend apps private enough to use if I am not out?

Check before you type anything real. Mozilla found most romantic chatbots share data with trackers and over half offered no working deletion. Also check the lock-screen notification preview and what the charge looks like on a shared statement.

Do AI companions help with loneliness?

In moderation — Harvard Business School researchers found companions relieve loneliness roughly as well as talking to a person. A 12-month study of more than 2,000 adults found heavier use predicted more loneliness over time. The benefit and the harm are the same product at different doses.
